Biography

Online death records have his parents as Peter and Ellen.

OBITUARY. THOMAS REID. By the death of Mr. Thomas Reid in the District Hospital on Wednesday last Dubbo loses one of its oldest pioneers. Mr. Reid was in his 89th year and was in good health on Easter Monday, when he was present at the carnival on the Show Ground, and took a keen interest in the proceedings. But on the Tuesday following he was seized with an internal complaint, and on examination it was found necessary to perform an operation. He bore up wonderfully well under his great trial, and displayed fortitude which endeared him to the nurses and other patients, with whom he became a great favorite. On Wednesday a second operation was successfully performed, but the strain was too great for one of his advanced years, and he succumbed to heart failure. The late Mr. Reid was a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, and was a good athlete in his young days. He successfully followed gold mining in the early sixties, and was on many rushes. He worked the first diamond mine in Australia at what was later known as Reidy's Creek, in the Mudgee district. With the exception of 12 months in Sydney, Mr. Reid spent 47 years in the Dubbo district. He was the first settler to select land on the Mogriguy in 1875, when his nearest neighbours were then at Gilgandra and Talbragar. To reach the Reid homestead was the objective of many a traveller, where they were assured of being hospitably received by Tom and his good wife, who mourns her loss. Besides his widow he is survived by four sons, Michael, Thomas and John, of Dubbo, and David, of the North Coast, and two daughters, Mrs. H. Sullivan, of Wellington, and Mrs. P. Doyle, of Sydney. There are 10 grandchildren. The remains were taken to St. Brigid's Church, where prayers for the dead were said by Rev. Father Kelly, who afterwards officiated at the graveside.

Headstone has his date of birth.
