Andrew Reid was born in the northern part of Ireland to a family of Scottish descendant, which had been in Ireland several generations. Reportedly, he ran into difficulties with a tax collector and was forced to immigrate to the American colonies in 1760. He married Esther McBrier (alternate spellings McBriar, McBryar and McBrayer), the only daughter of a colonial farmer, and settled in Pennsylvania. Andrew and Esther reportedly had eleven children, including David Reid, Robert, Martha, Ruth (Reid) Alexander, Esther (Reid) Ross, John, and William.had eleven known children. Andrew served in the Revolutionary War under Captain John Woods and Colonel James Johnston, in the Cumberland County (PA) militia. Andrew died sometime before 25 Mar 1819, in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Life Sketch: • From "1776 to 1976 Revolutionary Ancestors" by Dr. Reid Stewart "Family tradition says Andrew Reed was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, about 1733, but his brother John Reed resided in the townland of Clogher, County Londonderry, according to a letter written in 1805. Andrew Reed came to America c. 1751 as a fugitive in the hold of a ship after having struck a British official during a dispute over the division of stocks of grain in a field. After arrival he purchased the McBrayer farm from his father-in-law and named it "Reed's Purchase". During the Revolutionary War he served in the Cumberland County Militia beginning 10-23-1777 and again later. (Stephenson)
