James Reid was was the first boy born at the Scottish Settlement at Argyle, Illinois.

James Reid is buried in Scottish Cemetery, Caledonia, Illinois.

James was born in 1840. He was the youngest son of Scottish immigrants Hugh Reid and Mary Howie and the first boy born at the Scottish Settlement at Argyll in Illinois. ^[1][2]

He married Mary Breckenridge in 1867. ^[3]

He farmed in Harlem Township. ^{[4] [5][6]}

They had the following children:

2. Rev. Hugh Frank Reid 1873-1954
3. James M. Reid 1876–1939

Mary died in 1876 after giving birth to James.

James married Jane Smith in 1882. ^[7]

They moved to Rockford in 1908. ^[8][9]

Obituary

James S. Reid, 86 years old, 530 North Church street a resident of Rockford 19 years, died Friday afternoon at 1:35 o'clock at his home after an illness of a year from infirmities of age.

He was born on a farm near Argyle Nov. 12, 1840, and came to Rockford to make his home in 1908. He married Miss Mary Breckenridge June 27, 1867, and she died in 1876. On Oct. 12, 1882, he married Miss Jane Smith, who survives him.

He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Mary Iva Hammond, Kenosha, Wis. and five sons: Edward B. Reid, a farmer near Argyle, the Rev. H. Frank Reid, of Fall City, Neb., James M. Reid, of Rockford, Russell and William Howie Reid of Mercedes, Cal.

He also leaves 16 grandchildren.

He was an elder of the Presbyterian church while at Argyle and became a member of the First Presbyterian church when he moved to Rockford.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church, the Rev. W. H. Fulton officiating. Burial will be in the Argyle cemetery.^[11]
