Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Alsie (Redd) Burr is a part of US Black heritage.

Alsie was born about 1840 in Kentucky.[1] No clear records have been found for Alsie in Harrison or surrounding counties prior to her inclusion in the 1870 census. Nor does she appear to have been in Harrison County after 1870.

In the 1870 census, Alsie Burr was listed in the Rutland precinct of Harrison County in the household of Reuben Burr. Reuben was 30 years old, black, illiterate, and a farm laborer. His household included Alsie (his inferred wife), aged 30, black, illiterate. A 60 year old black woman, Frances Redd also lived in his household.[1]

It's not yet known if Alsie had any children.

Research Notes

  • Reuben may have been a slave of Thomas Redd, though this is still uncertain (see Slaves of the Thomas Redd family, Harrison County, Kentucky for further research on those individuals.
  • Frances Redd's relationship as Alsie's mother is inferred from her presence in Reuben's household in 1870. No direct evidence has yet been found. No 20 year old girl appears in the slave records of the Redd family in 1860. Further research into Redd descendents and collaterals may offer a suggestion of where they may have been. Identifying possible slave owners of the Burr family group may also provide leads in locating Frances and Alsie and determining their relationship.
  • With no further records found as yet, it's not certain that Alsie is the wife of Reuben and not some other relation. They do not appear to be siblings, since they were the same age. At age 30 in 1870, Reuben and Alsie were old enough to have unofficially been married prior to emancipation.
  • Several free families of color lived in Harrison County prior to the Civil War. It's still somewhat uncertain at this point if Alsie was descended from one of these or was enslaved.
