Biography

Lucius Redd was the youngest child born to William Redd and his first wife, (name not known) and the first of William Redd's children born in Missouri. It is probable that Lucius' mother died in or shortly after childbirth; her husband remarried in 1847.

Lucius was a Private in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. However he turned himself in to the Union forces in St. Louis, Missouri, the 13th of January 1865, claiming that he had not joined the Confederates willingly, but had been conscripted. He said he had deserted the Confederate army November 16, 1863.

His written "confession" or explanation can be found on Fold3 under L.B. Redd, Unfiled Papers and Slips Belonging in Confederate Compiled Service Records.

"I had been conscripted by the rebels and did not desire to fight for them, on or about 30th day of September 1864 . I left my home for the purpose of going to the (?) Randolph Missouri to prevent being conscripted by the rebels and to keep out of the way of Bill Anderson's gang. When I got about 12 miles from home, about 15 or 20 armed men overtook me, told me if I will not go with them to the South they would execute me. 8 or 10 drew their revolvers on me and forced me to go with them. In the party I recognized the following persons: John Arsenberry <sp?>, Polk Arsenberry, Angus Arsenberry, Lobe Hicks, all from Randolph County Missouri. "

In his paperwork he claims he is wants the South to give up, that he is loyal to the Union and that he has no slaves (his father does, but as this is not asked, he does not answer this).

He was described at age 19 as having auburn hair, fair skin and grey eyes.

[1] His paperwork seemed to be a request to be freed because he was not a volunteer, he escaped and never fought. He died before a decision was made, while still in prison, of measles and was buried in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. [2]. He had declared his loyalty to the Union, which may be why his gravestone says "Civilian".
