This enslaved ancestor's profile has a preliminary Last Name At Birth (LNAB) until a surname can be determined. Please see the US Black Heritage Naming Conventions for Slaves before merging or changing the LNAB.
Though the marriage of Anne and Samuel was contracted in 1774, Simmond first appeared in the Bettys Hope Estate land tax list in 1778, with her two eldest children.[1][2]
Her first two children were most likely born in the household of Antoinne Poyen on Guadeloupe, while the rest were born in the household of Samuel Thompson on St. Croix.
Her two eldest daughters were both sold in 1799,[3] three years after the death of Anne Thompson. Pierre disappeared from the tax lists between 1787 and 1790.[4][5]John Phillip grew to become a tradesman, and was still at that role in 1818,[6] though he did not appear on the 1835 land tax record.[7]Christina worked as a field hand through 1818.[6]
Simmond was listed among the House Negroes when the land tax of 1793 included them separately.[8] She continued in that role until the 1818 land tax, when she was listed among the Superannuated.[6] It is likely that she died a few years later.
Simmond's estimated Birth Date is based on the birth of her eldest child in 1775.
Her Last Name at Birth is the surname of her first known slave holder, Antoinne Poyen.
