Thomas was born in 1832 in Salford, Lancashire to Thomas Peart and Ann (nee Collins). He was baptised on 8th April 1832 at Manchester Cathedral.[1] In the 1841 census, his family are listed as PERT [2] When he was 19, he was working as a warehouseman [3][4] In 1861 the census records state he was a shipping merchant [5] and in 1871 Thomas had become a merchant levant for the East India company. [6] Both Thomas and Sarah disappeared in 1881 leaving their oldest daughter Louisa to manage the family. Perhaps they went on a voyage. In 1891 Thomas was living with his daughter Louise Grove and her family.[7]
Marriage: He married Sarah Dakin on 25 Dec 1853 at St Marys, St Denys & St George (now Manchester cathedral) [8]. They had 7 children.
Thomas died sometime after 1891.
This article is an interesting insight into Manchester during the 1800's Manchester’s growth rested largely on the growth of the cotton industry, and by mid-century the city typified Britain as the ‘workshop of the world’. Young men and women poured in from the countryside, eager to find work in the new factories and mills. The mills paid relatively high wages and they also employed large numbers of children. As a consequence, families migrating to the city often saw a considerable rise in their incomes. But not all aspects of life in the factories were pleasant. - [9]See more at: https://www.bl.uk/romantics-and-victorians/articles/manchester-in-the-19th-century#sthash.084jQbu1.dpuf.
My grandmother Beryl Peart said in a letter to me that he owned a owned a ship building works in Liverpool or nearby - Thomas was her grandfather. This seems to be substantiated by Sarahs occupation which is listed in 1861 as 'Shipping Merchant Employing 1 Man And 6 Boys'.
