Biography

Rob Neff participated in the 2023 US Black Heritage Project Connecting Challenge.
USBH Connecting Challenge
Rob has participated in the USBH Connecting Challenge.

Profile manager of the following Studies:

Born in Montana, grew up on a farm in Minnesota, became an engineer, currently in the Chicagoland area. My dad's side is German-from-Russia, my mother is half German from Germany, half English-Swedish-Scottish-? My wife is Bulgarian.

I like to improve old photos where possible, see an example here. This is my grandmother (middle), her siblings and parents, taken about 1950. It is creased and ripped and black and white. I was able to clean it up and then colorize it (using guesses for the colors of the dresses).

Since joining the WikiTree family in Oct, 2017, my mantra has been slow and steady. It took over a year to reach 1500 contributions, hit 2000 contributions in March of 2019, 4000 in February of 2021 and 6000 in March, 2022.

I have been a Wikipedia editor since 2006. Pretty decent at transcribing 18th and 19th century English handwriting.

In April of 2023 I was the "Member of the week", see my interview there.

Notable (for me) Relations

  • Fifth cousin, six times removed from Samuel F.B. Morse, painter and inventor of the Morse Code
  • Third cousin, four times removed from Dick Broadwell, an outlaw who rode with the Dalton Gang
  • 5x greatgrandson of Major Joseph Lindsley, who served as Major in the American Revolution
  • Sixth cousin to actor Kevin Bacon
  • Seventh cousin once removed from Barbara Bush
  • Eighth cousin once removed from Robin Williams
  • Eleventh cousin (!) once removed from Loudon Snowden Wainwright, American writer and grandfather of Rufus. Interestingly enough , the connection does not go thru my Wainwright ancestors.

Hi Rob, I see you have been working on Broadwells again lately, thanks! I suffer from genealogical ADHD and find I can't focus on one thing for very long! ;-) I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thanks, I too have bounced around a bit. I was doing some transcribing at National Archives, then got a request here to update a Broadwell. Genealogy is a weird mix of detail work and ADHD, since the number of branches multiply the farther you go back :-)

Hello!

My 4x great grandfather, Eugene Gilchrist (1822-1902) was the brother of Mary Gilchrist Broadwell. I was adding Eugene's siblings today and saw that I can't add her because she's already in WikiTree. I am new at this, and thought perhaps you could add her parents, Eugene Gilchrist and Sarah Clark Gilchrist to her profile?

posted by Gayle Babyak
Hello Gayle. I'm assuming you're talking about Gilchrist-1119, b. 1818. That profile is actually managed by L. Sauls, but Sauls and I are on the Broadwell one-name study together, so I think there won't be a problem with me changing that. It would be nice if we had some stronger sources than "personal notes", I see you've added pictures of their gravestones to Find-a-Grave, so there is that.

I will look through my Gilchrist file and put more sources on this week.

Hi Bob!

I’m your third cousin 1xremoved in the Lidströmline.

Would be nice to get in contact with you. I’ve Got a photo from the familyfarm From ab 1890 where you’re grandmothers grandfather Karl ” Charles” Lidström was born. The rescidential house is still standing ( under renovation for the moment)

Best regards!

Gosh ! I see that your mother is an Ungerecht ! Cool ! I also see in your tree that you're descended from a Krell, amazing, I am also. Maybe we're related through either or both of the Ungerecht or/and the Krell lines. I look forward to what you can find out-
posted by Carleton Procter
My Ungerecht-1 and my Ungerecht-2 are two different people on my tree, but thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Do you have Ungerecht relatives, or/and have seen that name before ? -It seems to be an unusual name, and hard to find.

  • Thanks for starting the Ungerecht Project. I look forward to what we can find out about the name origins and it's descendants. I hope I can find some long-lost cousins-

Also, my family and I were very good friends with an elderly Neff couple in Westmoreland, NH. They were Unitarians, and Mr. Emory Neff had been a college Professor. They've both since passed away, but their children live in various parts of the world. Maybe they're distant cousins of yours ?

Hi Rob,

Aleš Trtnik fixed the {Unsourced}} instructions. Thank you for pointing it out so it could be addressed! You're a great WikiTreer. :-) Regards, Natalie

Rob, thanks. If you click the link on the page:https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Category:Unsourced%20Profiles&u=12527844

you will see the template page with parameters. I will ask Aleš if he can improve the Unsourced Profiles page instructions, though, as it is a bit confusing. Thanks for pointing that out! Natalie

Hi, I love the idea for a Russlanddeutsche sub-project. If you would like to PM me about your vision, and how involved you want to be (project coordinator etc) then I am happy to discuss it with you and get the ball rolling.

Hi R,

Thanks for acknowledging me as a member of the Broadwell Name Study. I hope it will help both of us as well as the tree at large. I have been on WikiTree longer than you, but that doesn't mean I know much. There is so much to learn that I only count myself a little better than a complete newby! I will send you my email by private message...

Hi

Wish you a Happy New Year. May 2018 bring you all you need to be happy.

Congratulation for adding your contributions in December. Whatever the quantity of your contributions, they all count. As I always say "Quality is better than quantity" to make a great family tree.

Thank you for being a Wikitreer,

Guy Constantineau - Wikitree leader

Hi R.,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles.

It looks like German Roots Project would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag German_Roots will help you get updates about activity for that project.

Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Do you have some historically-significant ancestors? Look at the list of active projects to see if one fits your needs.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)
