Biography

LeGrande Miller was born November 30, 1897, on the Miller farm (now known as Rowdy Reserve) in Union Township, Ringgold County, Iowa. He is the son of Jarodus Miller and Eliza Hamilton.[1]

LeGrande was at home with his parents in the 1900 Census. Stella and Rosa had left home already but Rowdy and Eliza still had 11 kids at home with Nile on the way. David Gilbert, a widower was also boarding with them.[2]

In 1910, LeGrande was living with his parents on the Miller farm with 5 of his siblings.[3]

In 1920, LeGrande (22) was living in Ellston. Charley, Ira, James, LeGrande and Nile were at home with their parents.[4]

In High School, LeGrande was on the Ellston basketball team when basketball was just getting started. The team went to the State Tournament and the town and players were very proud of this accomplishment. LeGrande's younger brother, Nile, also played on the team.[5]

LeGrande loved other sports as well. He traveled for a while with a "colored team" as the manager of their baseball team.

LeGrande married Florene Cornwall, as her second husband, March 14, 1928, in Osceola, Iowa. The service was conducted by Rev. R. Comyn and LeGrande's cousins, Vera (O'Neal) Joy and Emery O'Neal, were witnesses.[6]

LeGrande was a livestock buyer all his life and loved animals.

LeGrande Miller died of a heart attack March 1977 in Lamoni. He is buried in Ellston Cemetery.

Note: Other tidbits from the Ellston centenniel book include the fact that Ira and James were WWI veterans. They are listed as being members at the organizational meeting of the American Legion Post there in 1920. It also says that the first building used was not large enough for their needs so "we also rented the hall of J.M. Miller. This hall, which is now the locker plant, we used for entertainment." There are also a couple of paragraphs included about the family: "Jarodus M. Miller lived on a farm near Ellston in Union township better then(sic) a hundred years ago, being one of the early settlers in this part of the territory. He was known to everybody as "Rowdy". He and his wife Eliza Jane Hamilton Miller had 14 children, 9 boys & 5 girls. They were Henry, Charlie, Arthur, Ira, James, Oral, LeGrande, Nile, Forrest, Stella (Paull), Rosa (Gibson), Dora (Rogers), Lera (Reasoner), and Maude (O'Neal). Rowdy was a farmer and a well known livestock dealer, dealing in cattle and horses. Rowdy and Eliza worshipped with the Methodist people at Ellston. Her interest and devotion to the Church was an inspiration to all who know her. Eliza passed away in 1930 and Rowdy in 1933. One daughter of Rowdy's, Maude Miller O'Neal is still living. She is 96 years old and lives in Nevada. One granddaughter of Rowdy's, Irma Miller Huntsman, daughter of Arthur and Inez Reasoner Miller still lives in Union twnshp on the farm that has been in her family for four generations, belonging first to her maternal great grandparents, Brice Sr. & Rachel Ann Harrod Reasoner and then her grandparents, Scott and Abbie Reasoner." This centennial book was published in 1981.
