Biography

Ruben was born in 1840. He was the son of John Miller and Caroline Unknown. Ruben was born in the small hamlet of Perry Centre, Genesee County, New York (now in Wyoming County, New York). His father was a carpenter and was mentioned in Probate papers filed in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York in April 1839 after his father's uncle Robert Mills Jr. died. By 1850 the Miller family was living in Poughkeepsie and they had a property worth $1,000. Ruben's mother died during the 1850s and John Miller moved the family to McHenry County, Illinois located near Chicago. His father remarried in 1861.

Ruben served in the Union Army for three years during the Civil War. He mustered in 24 May 1861 in Freeport, Illinois and mustered out 24 May 1864 in Huntsville, Alabama. He was a Private serving with the 15th Illinois Infantry. Ruben suffered ill effects from the war as he filed in April 1888 for an Invalid pension and was accepted.

After the war Ruben married Martha Baley in 1871, the sister of Loren Henry Baley who had married Ruben's sister Clara Miller. They lived in Marengo, Illinois where Ruben worked as a barber. Ruben and Martha had three sons and a daughter. Ruben died in Chicago in 1915.
