Young Had Aided Lonely Man, Death Reveals Strange Story Of Hollywood Stars Father: HOLLYWOOD June 14 IP: Death itself has roused from the shrouded past the story of screen star Loretta Young's father. He left his wife and children in Salt Lake City 31 years ago. Miss Young said that John V Earle ,58 ,who died in a charity ward of the Los Angeles General hospital June 6, may have been my father. She said she had been contributing to his support for 10 years or more, but Never Saw Him. " As far as I know this man may have been my father", said Miss Young's statement, " I never saw him. Ten or 12 years ago my parish priest came to me and said that a man who called himself Jack Earle and who said he was my father had come to him needing help I asked the priest what I should do and he said the mans story seemed clear to him. So I told him to send the man to see my lawyer. An arrangement was made for me to contribute to his support. I have done so ever since. I never heard further from him until just before the Miss Youngs grand mother Mrs Laura Young wrote her of the death." Mother Made Arrangements : I am obliged to tell you but you should know that a person who has called himself John Earle died in the general hospital of a stroke or heart attack the letter read, Please notify your mother and others who should know, Mrs Young explained that she had made funeral arrange ments out of savings from the monthly checks Loretta sent her. Miss Young did not attend the funeral services at Woodlawn cemetery in Santa Monica last Thursday but her sisters actresses Poly Ann Young and Sally Elaine were there. Her mother Mrs Gladys Young Belzer recalled the day in 1917 when her husband vanished from their Salt Lake City home "He was not a mean" she told newsmen, " but he was weak. He was handsome much too hand some for his own good." Married In Teens: She said she married him when they were in their teens and he was a railroad auditor. They traveled as he was assigned from city to city. After her husband left Mrs Young brought her children to Los Angeles and provided with training in the theater. The daughters all entered motion pictures. Mrs Young obtained a divorce in 1920 and three years later married George Belzer and bore him a daughter Georgianna. Mrs Young said her first husband never contacted her or the children, never wrote but chose another name and lived obscurely. When his second wife died 14 years ago he left the Alhambra stationery store where he was enmployed and became a member of the staff of the Los Angeles City college book store. John Earle Young: his biological father is unknown. He got his name from his step father who married his mother after John was born. When Loretta and her brother and sisters were adults their father went to the priest that they went to and told him that he was their father. The priest contacted Loretta's mother Gladys and she told them that they needed to help him financially. Loretta did not want to, but ended up doing it anyway. When he died in the 1940's Loretta did not want to go to the funeral, even though her husband thought it was a good idea. Her sister and brother ended up going though.

About 1917, John abandoned his family and made his way to Alhambra, CA. He married before 1920 to Rota E. Rusk. They lived many years in Alhambra. He died in a charity ward of a L.A. Hostpital, Loretta had given money to support him through her priest. He used the name of John Vickroy Earle.

In the 1900 census it states he was Earle Mendell, male b. in Missouri Sept. 1883. States he was a step-son to Benjamin Young.
