I have hit a brick wall on my Marshall side. I know my GGG grandfather is William Marshall, but nothing else. I do not know when he was born or where, although I think it was KY (others who have researched our Marshalls have said he was born in Germany). I know he married Anna Botts and they had a son named David C Marshall. I have been told he owned a plantation in KY and a hotel, but have not been able to confirm either one. I think he must have been born sometime in the early 1800's since Anna was born in 1820, but I have no idea when he died. I do know all records I find with Anna starting in 1870 do not ever mention William or have her listed as "widow of William". I am trying to figure out which Marshall line I'm from.

You have some excellent and specific questions which you might find help for by asking them in G2G Forum (see link on the first message here).
I know from experience WikiTree can be a bit overwhelming in the beginning, and recommend How to Use WikiTree for quick orientation (see link on the first message here).
A branch of my own tree goes to Kentucky in 1802, and gets lost there - early Kentucky is a tough nut to crack and I wish you best of luck.
As you search, you may find a profile that connects to your tree. Sometimes it is helpful to message the Profile managers and ask them if they have more information.
The more information you can enter into WikiTree, the more likely it is you'll find new clues.

Good luck with connecting your leaves and branches to our big tree,
I am researching a Marshall line I've traced back to Kentucky in the mid 1850s. I am in Texas and my father and grandfather and great grandfather are all from Ohio. My great great great grandfather moved to Ohio, but was born in Kentucky. I can not seem to find any information on his father, William Marshall, born around 1820 in Kentucky. He married Ann M Botts in 1856 in Kentucky. They had one child to my knowledge, David C Marshall born in 1856. He eventually moved to Ohio where he and his wife died. My mom's family is Johnston's and I've traced them to New Mexico and California. I am trying to find her birth mother, Betty Jean Johnston, whom I managed to trace to California, but lost track of her in 1967 when she filed for divorce. No one in her family knows where she is. I am trying to solve 2 mysteries. Which Marshall line am I from and where is my mom's mother. My mom never knew her mother and wants to know about her now. I finally managed to find members of my mothers direct maternal line. Her mother has died, but we discovered she has 2 half brothers she never knew existed. She had a half sister, too, but unfortunately it was her obituary that finally allowed me to trace them down. My mother is very excited to get to know her new family. Now if I could just figure out the Marshall line.
I have been researching my family tree for 2 years now. I have done DNA testing and joined 6 other websites to try to trace my ancestors. I've had some success, but am stuck on my paternal GGG grandfather. I want to trace my lineage. I have helped others tracing this family as well as for my mother's side. I am trying to find her birth mother, too.

The help pages give lots of information about the process, best to start with 'Before you import a GEDCOM'.
