Ellen (Manson) Baillie was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Ellen Manson was born on April 28, 1892 in northern New South Wales, a daughter of Alexander Manson (~1850–1929) and Frances Davis (1860–1946). She was possibly born at Upper Orara where her parents had selected property. However, her birth was registered in Grafton.[1]

For some years prior to Ellen's birth, her father was manager of McCauley and McLeod's sugar mill at Woodford Leigh. He was working on the roof of the building, when a sheet of iron blew off and carried him with it. His injuries were very severe, and he never recovered completely from them. His arm was broken in two places, his leg fractured, and he was injured internally. In 1889, the Manson family went to Upper Orara to seek a change and turned to storekeeping.[2] Two of Ellen's maternal aunts were already living at Upper Orara with their husbands and children, Henrietta Grace (Davis) Ferrett (1875-1959) and her husband Charles Ferrett (1868-1954) who were farming at "Wattle Dale" and Catharine Ann (Davis) Marles (1859-abt.1941) and James Marles (1849-1925) who was one of Coffs Harbour's first storekeepers. Her maternal uncle George Davis (1869-1923) also lived in the district with his wife and children. The Marles family migrated to Canada between 1904 and 1906. However, the Manson, Ferrett and Davis families remained for many years. Later, they were joined by Ellen's maternal grandmother Sophie Friederike (Schoeneck) Davis (1839-1912), known as "Rachel Davis".

For two years the Mansons had a small store on Coramba road. In 1890, Alexander Manson selected at Upper Orara and in the following year the family went out there to develop it.[2]

Ellen married William Francis Baillie on 25 Dec 1912 at her parents' home at Upper Orara. She was attended by Miss Fanny E. Manson (sister) and Miss Ferrett (niece) as bridesmaids.[3]

"Social Notes...
An interesting wedding was solemnised at the residence of the bride's parents on Christmas Day, when Mr. William Francis Baillie, of Murwillumbah, was married to Ellen, second youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Manson, of Upper Orara. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A. G. Gibbons, the bride being given away by her father. She was dressed in vieux rose eolienne, with silk lace trimmings, and wore the usual coronet of orange blossoms and long veil of embossed tulle. She was attended by Miss Fanny E. Manson (sister) and Miss Ferrett (niece) as bridesmaids, the former wearing white embroidered linen, and the latter cream shantung and insertion. Mr. Hugh Baillie acted as best man. The bride groom's present to the bride was a gold bangle, and to the bridesmaids gold brooches. After the ceremony refreshments were served, accompanied by the usual toasts incidental to such occasions. The newly-wedded couple left subsequently for their home at Murwillumbah, via Grafton.

The couple lived in Condong Road, Murwillumbah where William worked as a carpenter.[4]

Ellen died just 10 months after their wedding, aged 20 years, probably in or near Murwillumbah, where her death was registered.[5] There is a digital memorial for Ellen on Find a Grave which states she was buried in Murwillumbah Old Cemetery, Murwillumbah, Tweed Shire, New South Wales, Australia following her death on 21 October 1913 with a note that reads: "On the 6th August 1974 Tweed Shire Council (C H Jarvis President) resolved that the area be re-developed into a sacred park. The headstones where destroyed and the human remains are still at the site.'"[6] No death notice of funeral notice has been found for her to date. (Stopford-19 23:32, 24 February 2024 (UTC))

Ellen (referred to as "Mrs. W. Baillie" in keeping with convention at that time) is mentioned in her father's obituary published in 1929[2] and also the obituary published for her brother Alexander Manson (1882-abt.1933) in 1933.[7]
