Bernardino Luís Machado Guimarães nasceu em 28 de março de 1851 no Rio de Janeiro. Seu pai era português e sua mãe brasileira. Bernardino estudou matemática durante três anos e formou-se em filosofia em 1873. Doutorou-se em 1876. Detinha o título de Barão de Joane, foi Grão-Mestre do Grande Oriente Lusitano, o primeiro embaixador português no Brasil, o Presidente do Ministério e duas vezes Presidente da República Portuguesa, sendo o terceiro e oitavo presidente de Portugal.
Ele teve uma carreira acadêmica antes de sua política, ele chegou a professor titular. Foi o mais jovem professor da Universidade de Coimbra de sempre. Em 1880, ensinou Geologia; em 1881 foi encarregado da cátedra de Agricultura, passando em 1883 a reger a 1ª e 2ª cátedra de Física. Em 1886, é responsável pela cátedra de Antropologia - cátedra criada por sua iniciativa no ano anterior, marcando um dos pontos altos da sua actividade docente. Publicou também um grande número de livros que tratam da pedagogia, como "A Introdução à Pedagogia" (1892), "A Docência" (1898), "A Educação Básica e Secundária" (1899) e "A Educação Profissional" (1899).
Entre os seus descendentes estão o escritor e autarca Aquilino Ribeiro Machado (1930 - 2012), o primeiro presidente da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa eleito democraticamente após 25 de abril de 1974, e o investigador, professor e médico Júlio Machado Vaz (1949 - presente).

Bernardino Luís Machado Guimarães was born on the 28th of March 1851 in Rio de Janeiro. His father was Portuguese and his mother was Brazilian. Bernardino studied mathematics for three years, and graduated in philosophy in 1873. He received his doctorate in 1876. He held the title of Baron de Joane, he was the Grand Master of the Grand Orient Lusitano, the first Portuguese ambassador in Brazil, the President of the Ministry and twice President of the Portuguese Republic, being the third and eighth president of Portugal.
He had an academic career before his political one, he rose to full professor. He was the youngest professor of the University in Coimbra ever. In 1880, he taught Geology ; in 1881 he was in charge of the chair of Agriculture , passing in 1883 to rule the 1st and 2nd chair of Physics . In 1886, is responsible for the chair of Anthropology - chair created by his initiative in the previous year, marking one of the high points of his teaching activity. He also published a large number of books dealing with pedagogy, such as " The Introduction to Pedagogy " (1892), " The Teaching " (1898), " The Elementary and Secondary Education " (1899) and " The Professional Education " (1899)
Among his descendants are the writer and mayor Aquilino Ribeiro Machado ( 1930 - 2012 ), the first president of the Lisbon City Council democratically elected after 25 Apr 1974 , and the investigator, professor and physician Júlio Machado Vaz (1949 - present).
