I am stuck on this one:

Jesse (wife Sarah Ann (Morgan) Leeper) in Randolph, IL. He was born 1823 in Kaskaskia, died 1908, he sold his farm Canaan/Gasconade, MO and moved to Columbus, IL and that is where their grave is physically. In the old probate records at Randolph County, IL, Jesse was the sole heir of Matthew Leeper who I've been unable to discover any further information on- besides approximate death date. There is a James Leeper and John Leeper referenced in his estate papers, to whom small payments were made.

His son is Robert Edwin Leeper (1853 to 1915), farmed in IL and Kansas, and I am one of his descendants.

Any information you have or hints/advice- I sure could use some help. There are various genealogy site trees, but folks are just blindly hooking people to

Biography

Born in Modesto, CA, moved to Oregon when I was 4 or 5, lived in Springfield, OR until my dad re-married, and had my "half" sister Tammy . Danny Alan is my full brother.

Relationship
Relationship

I was severely electrocuted as a child at nine, and was in a wheelchair, it was a tough recovery, which I did on my own (family was too poor for physical therapy). By the end of middle school I was doing track and cross-country, and added football to that in high school. Also did concert, marching, and stage band.

Started off at Lane Community College, but I had always wanted to serve our country as a US Marine, and after a couple of years, I became a Marine.

Served 1986 to 1998, Honorable Discharge, Gulf War Veteran (the one they called Desert Shield/Desert Storm), and I am also a Service Connected Disabled War Veteran. Recipient of the Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various other medals and awards. Got out when they offered me 36,000.00 dollars to get out to allow others below me to be promoted.

Worked at FLIR Systems for a couple years on their airborne systems, and wanted to learn more in other areas. Dec 1999 I joined UPS Aviation Technologies working on cutting edge Avionics design, which was purchased ~2003 by Garmin. There I work as a Technical Lead Senior Design Engineer, my specialty is Avionics Hardware, Electrical Design Engineering, but I often am involved with optical, spectral, chemical, and mechanical areas.

My favorite activities are hunting, hiking, fishing, and generally anything outdoors as well as gardening and family activities.

2010, I was Blessed with my daughter, and again Blessed in 2012, a son. I also was approached and asked, and after considerable thought, assisted a lady to have two precious children of her own at an IUI/IVF clinic.

If you have any questions, thoughts, or connections, on my tree or DNA, please do reach out!

Since you can lose a whole generation sometimes for autosomal matching between kits from different vendors, and even within test versions, I've done several. Also, I've seen matches on different chromosomes to my own known relatives, depending on which Autosomal test kit I select for comparison! (it was also an interesting revelation when just matching between my own kits as well...)

Nebula Genomics Whole Genome Ultra-Deep 100x results completed July 2022, but nobody has good platforms for comparing whole genomes. However, from this highly accurate test, an autosomal kit was created which covers many of the SNP spots of the whole group, GEDMatch MB3609924. But some of the cheap autosomal tests up above have atypical errors, which may also be created in other's tests, occasionally one of the other kits will work better. A Combined kit of the atypical autosomal test services is also created, GEDMatch MZ044266C1.

Noelle and Caleb are DNA confirmed children of Doug Leeper. Also DNA confirmed grandchildren of Leeper-996. Sources 23andMe, Ancestry, My Heritage, and FTDNA.

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by an autosomal AncestryDNA test match between Doug Leeper and Doug Leeper, his father (direct ancestor). Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: Father, based on sharing 3,485 cM across 23 segments.

DNA has been confirmed and has been confirmed back to Augustine Hawkins b.1721, from the Leeper to Morgan to Hawkins lines (other side of match not mentioned- no permission to do so). He has also been DNA confirmed to Robert E. Leeper, and again with many matches to and thru Sarah Morgan- as well as Robert's Father Jesse Leeper- Douglas E. Leeper Jr. and his father Douglas E. Leeper b.1941, are closer matches yet- for further confirmation. Both of my children also match many of these. DNA confirmation has also done to Aquilla Gilbert b.1721 on Ancestry.com tree to the Pagel family with multiple matches (courtesy of Jim Pagel-BIG THANKS!). This takes the path to me from Gilbert to Swain, to Whitley, to St.Clair/Sinclair/Sinklear, to Robert E. Leeper b.1852. Lisa Hoard (Big Thanks!) also confirmed DNA match to Thomas Warner b.1581 d.1657. Leeper to Morgan to Augustine Hawkins b.1721(again), to Warner, then back down the tree to her. On the Leeper line, Y-DNA indicates Robert Leeper (abt.1700-abt.1795) to be the Immigrant ancestor and connects to James Leeper (1695-1763), to six descendant Leepers on his side, which was Robert's brother.

The family tree has been matched through DNA in places back to the year 1721 on some lines, even further on one (which was quite surprising!), so far over 100 DNA matches have been confirmed in both DNA and to family tree predictions, as well as records, on FTDNA, Ancestry.com, My Heritage, 23andMe, WikiTree, and GEDMatch and contacting the other person, and some folks contact me as well. And additional numerous times to "4th, 3rd cousins".

23andMe Autosomal testing reveals (which is actually wrong):

49.9% of your ancestry is French & German, with the match being called closest to German (this is not at all close whatsoever, it is actually zero) 8.4% United Kingdom - Dublin, Ireland 6.4% Northwestern European 0.4% Finnish 19.2% Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland (mother's side actually) 10.5% Tuscany, Italy 0.9% Iranian, Caucasian & Mesopotamian

Where Ancestry.com breaks it down differently: 36% Northwestern Europe 22% Eastern Europe 21% Northern Italy 9% Scotland 4% Wales 3% Sweden & Denmark 3% Ireland 2% The Balkans 2% Germanic Europe

Knowing my extended Family Tree (nearing 30,000 people in it) and ancestors, I would say that Ancestry is by far much more accurate.

Y-DNA

Y-DNA: Leeper's Brothers and Cousins

I am also the project administrator at FTDNA for the Leeper Y-DNA Project, and after much work, going down from the Immigrant Ancestors, and building family trees to their descendants, I have been able to talk a few living Leeper males into doing the Y-700 Y-DNA test, the above is where we ended up at early 2023, additional tests are on-going. If you are a Leeper, please do contact me!

Big Y-700: going down to my sub-clade: R-BY14173, R-Y100302, R-FTB7362, and finally R-Y315697 terminal (Y-Full) is my final terminal one. (Using FTDNA designators for the same, R-BY14173, R-FT203438, R-FTB6302, R-FTB76258, R-FTB75688 terminal). Nebula Genomics 100x Ultra Deep Whole Genome confirms the same as Y-700.

Y-DNA Leeper Roots to Scotland/Ireland through common ancestors, 16 Y-700 Y-DNA matches, then on back on back in time to the Alps, Iberia-Italy area, before the era of surnames.

The path for my specific genetic Y ancestors (male) and where the DNA was found, as well as places, I'll walk you through my own specifics, which are very different from a lot of folks. My Male ancestor looks to have taken quite the journey! :

- R-FTB6302 shows up in Ireland/Scotland in 660 CE or 1,300 years ago (the estimated dates change and get refined as we get more testers in our branch). One of the testers goes back to Edinburgh, Scotland in 1611, where we have a common ancestor in 1297, which is close to when John Leeper, Burgess of Edinburgh affixed his seal 1 Sept 1189 to the coat of arms that was awarded for heroic acts and great service to his country. 16 Y-700 Y-DNA testers converge here, Robert Leeper's descendants, James Leeper's descendants, Andrew/Allen (PA area) Leeper descendants, then three branches from Scotland, two known Leeper lines, and one Napier (one family heritage records mention Leeper of Clan Napier (also an Edinburgh Clan), and I've learned often the smaller Clans would band with the larger Clans in times of trouble).

Back in time R-FTB2030438, RB-Y14173, R-BY3478, R-BY3484, R-BY31164, R-FT87492, RBY3485 run from 1,200 BCE (3,200 years ago) to 1600 BCE (3,500 years ago) This takes you back to the Iberia-Italy era.

- R-L2, R-U152, on back to R-L51 and to R-L23 run from 2,500 BCE(4,400 years ago) to 4500BCE (6,400 years ago) which take you from Italy to Austria, Hungary/Solvakia, to Moldova/Romania, and over in Ukraine/Russia border area.

- R-M269, R-P297, R-L389 run from there through Georgia/Azerbaijan near the Tusheli National Park where the DNA has been found. Runs from 11,000 BCE 15,000 BCE (13,000 to 17,000 years ago)

- R-L754 is the next stop near Tehran, which 18,000 BCE (20,000 years ago)

- R-M343 is then found on the Turkmenistan/Uzbekistan border 18,000 BCE

- The next mutation back takes you to R-M173 21,000 BCE (23,000 years) in Kazakhstan

- R-M207 is 29,000 BCE (31,000 years ago) and is found between Pavlodar and Novosibirsk, on the "Russian" side.

- P-P226 takes you to 33,000 BCE aka 35k years ago (kya), right above Mongolia, below Sayano-Shushenskiy Gosudarstvennyy Prirodnyy Zapovednik.

- P-284, P-M45 are 39,000 BCE and 40,000 BCEright above Mongolia, on a line running from Gosudarstvennyy Prirodnyy Zapovednik Azas to Altan Els in Mongolia. If you ran a third line and made a triangle to Khovsgol Lake National Park, it would be right about in the middle of it.

- P-P295 Takes you back west and a little south then, at 42,000 BCE in Kyrgyzstan, 42,000 BCE or 45,000 years ago.

-P-PF5850 and K-YSC0000186, 43,000 BCE Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan respectively.

- K-M526 gets you to 47,000 years ago or 45,000 BCE, near Isfahan, Iran

Then you work the mutations from there to Basrah, Iraq by Kuwait, on down to UAE, to Yangudi Rassa National Park in Ethopia (CT-M168) 86,000 years ago, and on over back into the middle of Africa.

Keep in mind, that like the original peoples of R-M269, R-L2 ended up migrating into places like the UK, where they now form much of the bulk of the Y-DNA there. For example Naill of the Nine Hostages wasn't just mythical, he was the Irish High King, and they find his specific Y descendants in 3 million Irish men (many who moved to America, and helped found it in the Revolutionary War), then one would have to count those descendants as well. He was around 379 AD, in Tara, the ancient center of Ireland. The name O'Neill or Ui Neill in Gaelic literally means "descendant son of Niall." This family name has the strongest matches to him, 60 samples in that Surname alone. There are legends about his "prolific lifestyle"... So, like Genghis Khan, who had 40 sons, it is estimated he has 16 million descendants in Asia, DNA testing shows 1 in 9 Mongolian males are his descendants.

mtDNA: H5e1b2a (FTDNA mt full sequence- Nebula Genomics 100x Ultra Deep Whole Genome confirms the same result).

Over wintered in Italy during the last complete European Glaciation, Basques whom rode out the glaciation in the Santimamiñe caves, share a common ancestor, before the last peak in the Glaciation, where it receded about 12,000 years ago. My unique mtDNA helps give weight to this "Italian Refugium", amongst a group of other folks who also do. My mtDNA was not part of the series of later waves that poured into Europe, it was already established long before then.

mtDNA EKA: Earliest record dated: Assunta Del Nista abt 1793 - 19 Oct 1868 Staffoli, Santa Croce sull'Arno, Firenze, Toscana, Italy. Then her mother, Maria Della Maggiore abt 1770 - Staffoli, Santa Croce sull'Arno, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

(on a side note, on most these matches, I ran against my Dad as well, and the matching DNA goes up...)

13.2 cM full single segment, and 24.5cM total is pretty decent for someone so far back, so there may be more than one path through someone not yet connected at WT.

So here below, for giggles- even though it is too far back for Autosomal to be certain, I run all the listed people on WikiTree (there is dramatically far more over at Ancestry, BTW), this is just an exercise to see what happens here, and a number of them are low segment amounts, others are more reasonable, and above 7 cM.

I descend through her other daughter Nora Edith (Lang) Leeper Lang-6665.

Maternal line mitochondrial DNA test-takers:

It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Doug: Have you taken a test? If so, login to add it. If not, see our friends at Ancestry DNA.

Hi Doug, I received your private message (which comes via email). Unfortunately, when I responded to you I got an error message. Evidently you have your gmail account set up to not allow messages.... Anyway, if you want to see what stickers you can add for the U.S. Southern Colonies project, you can see them at this page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Southern_Colonies_Stickers
Hello cousin Doug -

Received your message! Yes, we do match at 28.5 cM on Chr 7 leaving the settings on default.

It says in the Relationship to Me calculator that we are 9th cousins via William & Lydia Owens, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Owen-1906. I'm also finding that we are both the 9th great grandchildren of John Bass & Elizabeth the Nansemond, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Nansemond-1. I do have Johnson's but not finding our connection there...

Hope you are enjoying WikiTree and finding lots of connections! – Patty

Wow, that is amazingly far back!

I'm new at the whole WikiTree thing, how do I set folks I'm utterly confident from DNA as well family knowledge, to confident. I had not noticed that until I tried the Relationship To Me tool, which took me a while to find...

Setting a parent to "confident" is done from the edit page of a child (right hand side of page under edit family of Father or Mother). https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Confident

The drop-down links at the top of the page are very helpful!

Hi Doug,

Received your message. Yes, if your line proves out you are a direct descendant of Elizabeth the Nansemond!

Hi, Doug!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Doug,

Welcome to WikiTree. We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.
