James was born at Newbigging, Fordyce, Banffshire on 3rd June 1881. He was the son of James Symon and Isabella Robb. [1].
His parents were not married and while he was registered as 'Robb' by the time of the 1891 Census he was using the surname 'Symon' and was living with his grandparents George Symon and Jane Bremner at 54 East Church Street in Buckie, Banffshire. [2]
In 1901 John was 18 years of age (20) and a blacksmith's apprentice. He lived at 15a North Land Street, Buckie with his mother, Isabella Robb and her family. [3]
At some point after 1901 John went to Glasgow where he continued blacksmithing. On 3rd June 1904, his 23rd birthday, he married Mary Louise Baker a Salvation Army officer, in Anderston, Glasgow. They married in the Salvation Army Hall and the marriage was solemnised by the Salvation Army Adjutant, Edwin Gay. At the time of their marriage they both were resident at 2 Whitehill Terrace, Cathcart, Glasgow and the record of their marriage confirms John's father was James Symon, coalminer.
He passed away in 1957.
