Jonathan Janes was one of the Founding Fathers of St. Albans Vermont.

Sergeant Jonathan Janes served with 6th Massachusetts Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Jonathan Janes was born in 1756 at Brimfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[1] He was a son of Jonathan Janes and Irene (Bradford) Janes.[2]

He was a soldier of the American Revolution.[1] Volunteering as a minuteman before the war began, he enlisted and served eight months in Colonel Timothy Danielson's 8th Massachusetts Regiment. In 1777, he assisted a surgeon in Colonel Woodbridge's Massachusetts regiment. Then he served for a short time in Colonel Dennison's Connecticut militia regiment. In 1778, he enlisted for nine months and served as a Sergeant to command the provost guard at Fishkill, New York. In Sep 1778, he guarded stores for the acting Deputy Commissary General. He then joined Colonel Thomas Nixon's Massachusetts regiment and served as clerk to Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Thompson. He was discharged in Mar 1779.[3][4]

While residing in St. Albans, Franklin County, Vermont, Jonathan sold to Erastus Lathrop, of Sutton, Lower Canada, 50 acres of land in Richford, Franklin County, Vermont, on the Canadian border, 7 May 1804.[5]

Jonathan Janes passed away on 20 Jun 1823 at Franklin County, Vermont.[1][2] He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Saint Albans, Franklin County, Vermont.[6]

Research Notes

Vermont Vital records state that Jonathan died on 29 Jun 1825 at the age of 69 (making his birth year 1758). The place of death: St. Albans, Vermont.[7] The FindAGrave information appears to be based on the Vermont vital records.[6]
