{{Succession}} is a Navigation Box that links profiles in a sequence, e.g., for an inherited title.

Purpose

The purpose of the Succession Navigation Box is to:

  1. highlight the office, title, or other sequence because of its great significance for the profile, and
  2. enable viewing users and computer applications to easily navigate between profiles in the sequence.

Rules for Usage

  • They may be used on either person profiles or free-space profiles.
  • They should be placed directly above the Biography headline, below any Research Note Boxes and Project Boxes.
  • If multiple successions are included on a profile, they should appear in the same Succession Box. No more than three is recommended, and it should never be more than five.
  • They may replace the need to put a biographical summary line above the Biography headline.
  • They do not replace the need for biographical text and source citations.
  • They are created and managed by projects.
    • The project managing the box may choose to include an image. If an image is used, it should be a 75-pixel thumbnail.
    • The project decides which profiles should use the box.
    • Although the project manages the usage of the box, the project does not need to manage the profiles using the box.
  • On person profiles, they should only be used for successions with great genealogical or biographical significance, and where navigating from one profile to another in succession is a common need for users. This decision is made by members working within projects, but as with all style rules, it may be discussed by the wider community.

How to Use

See Template:Succession for technical documentation.

See Benjamin Franklin for an example on a profile.

Note that Template:Succession replaces the old Template:Succession_box and Template:Succession_box2. Those two have been deprecated. They should not be added to new profiles and should be replaced with Template:Succession over time.
