Biography

Allen Griffey has Appalachian roots, in Kentucky.

Allen Griffey was born on 15 Aug 1925 at Middletown, Butler county, Ohio. He was the son of Axley Griffey and Carrie Borders.

In the 1930 census Allen (age 4) and siblings Lenzy (age 10), Mildred (age 7), and Belva (age 0) were in the home of their parents, Axley Griffey (age 33) and Carrie Griffey (age 33) at Lemon, Butler, Ohio, United States. ^[1]

In the 1940 census ) Allen (age 14) and siblings Lenzy (age 20), Mildred (age 17, and Belva (age 10) were in the home of their parents, Axley Griffey (age 44) and Carrie Griffey (age 44) at Middletown, Middletown, Butler, Ohio, United States.^[2]

Allen grew up in Middletown and attended Middletown High School. He experienced some tragedy as a young teen when a group of friends went swimming in the Great Miami River near his home. One of his friends accidentally drowned. ^[3]

Allen later enlisted in the WWII draft on Oct 13, 1943 at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio. He was 18 years old.^[4] After enlistment he was sent from the enlistment station at Fort Thomas, Kentucky to Camp Wheeler in Virginia.^[5] He served for about three years and was discharged at Camp Atterbury, Indiana about May 4, 1946.^[6]

He is seen in the Middletown city directory in 1944 residing at 904 Catalpa Drive along with his parents and siblings.^[7] He married Anna Pearl Thompson sometime before 1949. They are seen residing at 1200 Girard Avenue in 1949 and 1951. They have a daughter who is living.^[8]

Allen was a tank operator at Aeronica Aviation. His obituary indicated that he was a truck driver. Allen & Anna are not seen in Middletown directories after 1951. They were divorced sometime after 1951. Anna remarried Jack McClanahan on 18 Oct 1985 at Butler county, Ohio.^[9]

Allen was remarried later in life to Wanda Sue (Leach) Combs. Details are unknown. Wanda and Allen resided at 657 McCullough Hollow Road, Salt Lick, Bath, Kentucky. Wanda was employed by Accutronix Manufacturing in Owingsville, Bath, Kentucky. She died (age 59) on 16 Mar 2009 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia after an extended illness. ^[10] She was buried at the Dickerson Cemetery, Salt Lick, Bath, Kentucky, United States. ^[11] An obituary with photo of Wanda is seen at Tributes.com.^[12]

Allen passed away at his residence in Salt Lick, Kentucky on 12 May 2014. He was 88 years old and was buried with Wanda at the Dickerson Cemetery, Salt Lick, Bath county, Kentucky.^[13]
