Biography

Pierre Leander Green was born August 11, 1847 in Maria, Quebec which is on the Bay de Chaleur. He spent his early childhood years there and took to the sea at an early age. Pierre Leander always went by the name Leander, Captain, or Cap.

Captain Green's father was French and his mother was Irish, so he was raised bilingual. In English, his surname was Green, but to the French he was known as Guite. His christening record christens him as Pierre Leander Green; his father is christened as Jean Baptiste Green, and his grandfather is buried as Joseph Guite dit Green. So the surname Green started back several generations earlier.

Captain Green first started as a cabin boy at the age of 16 on the Bay de Chaleur. Then he had a stretch on the Great Lakes; during the American Civil War he worked on a boat on the Mississippi River, mostly carrying troops up and down the river for the North. He was about 18 years old at the time.

When the civil war was over, he shipped out as an Able Seaman from New Orleans on a tramp sailing ship and sailed the world over. He sailed around Cape Horn, up the Pacific. He was in Africa, was held up and robbed in Bordeaux in the South of France, and he was shipwrecked on the West coast of Ireland. Here, he was one of 3 survivors, the Captain and the rest of the crew having gone down with the ship or drowned while trying to reach shore. Leander and his companions wound up harvesting flax, which was pulled and bound for linen. After a time they finally got another ship and in due time arrived on the West coast of the United States.

In 1872 Leander was on Puget Sound, Washington where he took out a pilots license for piloting large ships in and out of Puget Sound. During the 1800s he was Captain on the freight and passenger steamer "City of Denver" which ran from Victoria, British Columbia to Los Angeles, Calif.

It was at this time that he met Mary Byers Knox, who was the daughter of John and Margaret Knox. Leander and Mary were married 11 Sep 1880, King county, Washington and resided in Seattle. Mary Knox Green died about 1885-6, Mount Vernon, Whatcom, Washington. Leander then returned to Quebec during the winter of 1886-7. While there, he met and married Emma Manderson. He brought his bride back to Washington state where they homesteaded on land in Skagit County.

In 1889 he heard that gold was being discovered in the north, so he headed to Dawson City, British Columbia. He prospected and staked claims but they were not very successful. He moved to Dawson City where he lost all his supplies in a fire and he ended up cutting cord wood for a steamboat company. He later got a job running a boat for the same company from Dawson City to Nome, Alaska. Later, he bought the steamer "Monarch" and ran it on the same route. All this time, he left his wife on the farm to manage and look after the farm, a herd of sheep, and 6 small children.

In 1902 Captain Green's steamboat "Monarch" burned at the dock, so he sold his other interests and decided to take up ranching. Land was opening up around Stettler, Alberta, so he moved his family again and took up a homestead near the town of Liberal.

Here is where he resided until his passing in 1931. He was buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in Stettler, Alberta, Canada.
