Biography

Sarah Gavan (married name Spring) was born around 1820 in Ireland.

She married William Spring on 27 February 1840 at Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland.^[1][2]

The Borrisokane baptismal register survives from 1821 and has been indexed.^[3] It contains four children with father Spring and mother Gavan (or variant spellings).

The couple's children were:^[4]

• John Spring (1842–1914), baptised 9 April 1842^[5][6][7]
• William Spring (1843–1935), baptised 13 May 1843^[8][9]
• Frances Mary Spring (1844–1920), baptised 5 October 1844^[10][11][12]
• Francis Spring (1848–?), baptised 8 April 1848^[13]

In Griffith's Valuation of the Barony of Lower Ormond (dated 25 Feb 1852), Sarah Spring occupied no. 19 Church-street in the part of the town of Borrisokane standing on the townland of Shesheraghmore, a house and yard with rateable annual valuation of 15 shillings.^[14] She was probably widowed, for her husband would have been listed as occupier if he was living. The immediate lessor was Richard Lynch, who occupied no. 18 next door.

Sarah died on 28 June 1882 in Borrisokane, Ireland.^[1]

Research notes

• Sarah and William had only one daughter, Fanny,^[15] but could they have had more than three sons?
• When was Sarah born? 1820 is a complete guess.
• Who were Sarah's parents?
• Sarah's surname "Gavan" is also variously spelt 'Gavin',^[12]and 'Garven'^[6]

No birth records have so far been able to be found. The census records of 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were destroyed in 1922 when the Free State army exploded mines in the basement of the public records office.^[16] According to the UK Government, civil registration of births, marriages and deaths started in Ireland in 1864. Before this births were recorded in parish registers, many of which have been lost, destroyed, or are missing for other reasons.^[17]

The original marriage document from 1840 does not show parents' names.
