Biography

This profile is part of the Duke Name Study.

Adam was born about 1794. He is listed on the tax list in Conecuh County, Alabama as early as 1818.[1][2] He was married to Catherine, and they raised their family there.[3][4][5] In the late 1850s, they moved to Panola County, Texas, where Adam bought large tracts of land.[6][7] The family sold most of it after he passed away in early 1860,[8][9] He is buried in the Nutt Cemetery, which is located on the land that Stephen M. Nutt purchased from his heirs.

Adam and Catherine had 7 children:[10]

DNA

  • Paternal relationship is suggested through Y-chromosome DNA test results on Family Tree DNA. J.R. Duke, FTDNA kit # B750248, and potentially his 4th cousin, B.E. Duke, FTDNA kit # 132546, match at a Genetic Distance of 0 on 111 markers, thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their most-recent common ancestor, possibly Joel Duke, who could be the father of both John M. Duke, the 3x great grandfather of J.R. Duke, and Adam Duke, the 3x great grandfather of B.E. Duke. Their haplogroup is I-BY62571.
  • While the current Y-DNA connection is not enough to confirm the connection to Joel Duke, it has been speculated that John M. Duke may have been his brother, and yDNA evidence indicates that to be a possibility, although the closeness of the relationship is still unproven. Descendants of both men are known to descend from John Duke from Isle of Wight, Virginia. Their haplogroup is I-BY62571.[11]

Research Notes

  • Some sources indicate that Adam's father was Joel,[10] but the Smyth book lists him as John. No records have provided definite proof at this time. It is also theorized (but unproven) that John M. and Adam may be the brothers of Joel Emerson Duke,[12] and there are distant autosomal matches that suggest a connection, but none of his male descendants are known to have done a yDNA test at this time.
Can you help solve the mystery of their ancestors?
  • Land records also seem to suggest that there could have been a relationship between Adam Duke, Joel Duke, and John Duke.
  • One user edited his biography to say that "he married Catherine Nutt in 1826 in Georgia," but this was unsourced. If anyone has a source to prove their marriage date and location or Catherine's maiden name, please contact the manager of this profile.
