Herbert Lionel Douglas was born on 18 Feb 1876 in Glenelg Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada to William Douglas, gentleman and Mary Anne Biggar. [1]
Fact: Residence (1911) Grey East Sub-Districts 1-27, Ontario, Canada
When Ann Elizabeth was first born, just two years after her parents were married, they lived in the same farmhouse as her maternal grandparents, William and Ann Biggar. As of the 1861 census, the family was counted as part of the same household, as well as her uncle, William‘s younger brother, Walter Douglass, age 20, also listed as a farm labourer. The seventh member of the household on the census was a 14 year old girl names Eliza Wherry, possibly a housemaid.[2].
In 1871, Ann Elizabeth's father, William was now head of the household, her grandfather had passed away, and her grandmother was living with the family, which by now included six children, from 12 to 6 months in age.[3]
In 1874, William and Mary Ann and their family moved to Grey County, where William had worked 17 years earlier, and in the area where now a number of his siblings lived.
As of 1881, William and Mary Ann were settled in the south of Grey County, and their family was complete, with the youngest having just arrived in 1878 (little Arthur). William continued to farm, but also helped out with the census this year, acting as the enumerator for the township of Glenelg where they lived.[4].
