John was born in 1748 in Frederick, Maryland, the son of Thomas Dawson*(See Research Notes, below) and Elizabeth (Lowe. He stated in his pension documents that he "moved with his father's family" from Maryland to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he served in the Revolutionary War, building forts and patrolling in what was to become the Northwest Territory and later, the state of Ohio. In Jan 1796, he was granted 100 acres of military land for his service.(Maryland Revolutionary War Records, available on Ancestry.com). That original land was, he stated, in Kentucky, so he moved there and lived seven years before relocating, finally, to Champaign County, Ohio (about 1803).
According to The History of Champaign County, Ohio, John settled there before 1805.[1] In 1836, at the age of 87, he appeared at the Court of Common Pleas in Champaign County to obtain his Revolutionary War Pension, which he was awarded.
John passed away in Champaign County, Ohio, in 1845 at 97 years of age and is buried at Oak Dale Cemetery in Champaign County.[2]
John's will, dated 18 Apr 1839 and presented for probate in Champaign County on 15 Apr 1846, mentions by name only three children: son William and daughter Margaret (Dawson) Rush - each of whom was to receive one dollar - with everything else to go to unmarried daughter Catherine Dawson.[3]
