Biography

Michael Joseph Coughlin was born on 27 Dec 1870 in Fall River, Massachusetts to James Coughlin and Mary (Sullivan) Coughlin, Irish immigrants.[1][2][3] He, like his two older brothers, became an undertaker and would establish, along with his brother Daniel, what would become the Coughlin Funeral Home.[4][5][6][7]

In 1900 he married Catherine Frances Shay, a Fall River native of Irish parents.[8][9] They would have five children together.[10][11][12][13]

Catherine died in 1947 at the age of 73.[14][15] Michael died in 1956 at the age of 85.[16]

Tom Lamar Coughlin
M. J. Coughlin, my Grandfather was known as Uncle Mike in Fall River. As a youth he went to work at a funeral home with his brother Dan. After the death of the owner, the Daniel and M.J. Coughlin funeral home took over in the late 1800's. His brother died young and M. J. sent all his kids to prep school and college, making up for his lack of formal education. He was very friendly, outgoing and beloved by most. He was my favorite grandfather (well, also the only one I knew). Tom Lamar Coughlin
