Unfortunately, many early Virginia records were destroyed during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars so it is difficult to locate birth, marriage and death records. As a result, no one can state with certainty who the Collins ancestors were of John Collins II of Maidstone. (That said, one is left to rely on wills, books, manuscripts, family histories and publications which there are many --- each with conflicting information.

On June 11, 1766, “the Last Will and Testament of James Collins, deceased, was proved by the oath of John Woolf oik [Woolfolk] and Paul Thilman, witnesses thereto; John Collins, executor therein named having taken the oath and given bond as the law directs, certificate in due form is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof”. It was “ordered that James Dismuker, Richard Woolf oik, William Southworth, and Thomas Laughlin or any three of them being first sworn before some Justice of Peace of this county do appraise in current money, the slaves and personal Estate of James Collins, deceased, and return same to court”. Witnesses: John Wollfolk, Paul Thilman. 1752 - James Collins, Stephen Collins, Joseph Collins and Thomas Prewitt Sr all lived near each other in Amelia Co and all moved together to Lunenburg Co which became Halifax in 1752
James (1688) has several records with Prewitt's indicating that [[Collins-8726|Joseph (1718) is likely his son (and brother to family unit J1-J6 pp.15-20, Reportedly son William received land from his Grandfather ? Robinson [Robertson] (m Moss/Wyatt).
