It was a medieval parish and a parish for civil and religious purposes from the sixteenth century until 1975. Alva was originally in Clackmannanshire until the seventeenth century, when it became a detached part of Stirlingshire. The boundaries of the civil parish were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891 and it was returned to Clackmannanshire. Scotland's Places
