The 5th Battalion, Queensland Imperial Bushmen initially arrived in South Africa in the Second Boer War in April 1900 with three mounted squadron and a cyclist squadron; a strength of 529 all ranks. They withdrew in March 1902. The battalion lost 26 killes in action / died of wounds and four died from disease. Commanding officer was Lieutenant Colonel John Flewell-Smith.
