Biography

His name was David Van Brown, but he went by Van Brown. He usually signed his name as D. Van Brown, though sometimes it is incorrectly written as Daniel instead of David in public records. He was probably named after his maternal grandfather, David Vanhoy.

Van was born Nov. 14, 1875, in Cumberland County, Tennessee, the son of James Brown and Susannah Minerva“ Susean Manurvey” Vanhoy Brown. He was one of at least eight children:

Lydia was born about 1862, in Tennessee;

Rhoda was born about 1863, in Tennessee;

James L. was born about 1864, in Tennessee.

David Van “Van” was born about 1865, in Cumberland County, Tennessee;

Parthena, born about 1866, in Tennessee;

Elvira, born about 1870, in Tennessee;

Evert was born about 1874, in Tennessee;

Andrew was born about 1876, in Tennessee.

He showed up on the 1880 census in Morgan County, Tennessee, living at home with his parents. Sometime after 1880, he married Mary Levonia “Leona” Chilton and they had four sons and three daughters.

Their children were:

Armilda was born about 1895, in Kentucky;

Gillen, a son, was born about 1899, in Kentucky;

Roosevelt was born on January 8, 1902, in Casey County, Kentucky;

Ersia was born about 1905, in Kentucky;

Leo was born about 1910, in Kentucky.

He was listed on the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses in Casey County, Kentucky. He died in Casey County, Kentucky and is buried in the South Fork Church Cemetery in Casey county, Kentucky.

In addition to raising their children, Van and Leona also raised George Brown, born in 1919. It is not known how George was connected to the family, whether he was a cousin, an adopted son, or even Van's illegitimate son.
