Biography

William Brown was born on 31 May 1816 in Newton by Chester, Cheshire, and christened on 28 Jun 1816 at St Oswald's in Chester, Cheshire. He was the son of John Brown and Ann (Monk) Brown. His father's occupation was recorded in the christening record as gentleman, and the family's address as Brook Street. William's grandparents had founded the well-known department store Browns of Chester in about 1831, and William, in his turn, ran it.

William married Emma Faulkner on 10 Dec 1846 at Manchester Cathedral.

William was mayor of Chester in 1886-7.

William died on 7 Mar 1900 in Chester, Cheshire.

Research Notes

The obituary gives his birthplace as Flookersbrook, Lancashire, which is a bit puzzling since the censuses of 1851 and 1861 suggest he was born in Chester, and he appears to have been christened there.
