Entry in Domesday People is called "Roger De Berchelai. Keats-Rohan writes:
In 1086 he was already reeve of Berkeley with his brother Ralph.
He died about 1091-3 as a monk at Gloucester.
Probably the father of Roger II of Berkeley and his brother Eustache of Nympesfield.
It has been suggested that the family come from Aumale, Seine-Maritime.
Complete Peerage:
Uses the word provost instead of reeve and states that the castle was under Earl William fitzOsbern.
"He was tenant in capite of Dursley, Cubberley, Dodington, &c., and (not improbably) was identical with " R o g e r , " farmer of Barton Regis, Bristol."
