Reuben was born in Leamington, Ontario in 1866.[1] He grew up in Mayfield Township, Michigan and Andersonville, Tennessee with his parents John and Harriet and older siblings Hattie, Idumea, Edward, and Elizabeth.[2][3]
In 1886, he married Martha Longmire in Anderson County, Tennessee.[4] Together, they had seven children:
In 1900, the Avis family lived in Tousdale, where Reuben worked as a farmer.[8] In 1910 and 1920, the family lived in Campbell County, where Reuben continued to farm.[9][10] In 1930, Reuben and Martha lived in their home alone, Reuben continuing to farm.[11]
He passed away in Jacksonville, Florida in 1939.[1] He was buried at Andersonville Cemetery in Andersonville, Tennessee.[12]
