Petition of Captain Daniel Allen of the Town of Ashford (Windham co. CT), that he was in the service of the United States in the Connecticut Line in the revolutionary war on the Continental establishment from the commencement of the revolutionary war, to the 7th day of July AD 1779, as Lieutenant and Captain in the Army of the United States, when he was honourably discharged. That he is indigent, and by reason of his reduced circumstances stands in need of assistance from my country for support, and prays the benefit of a certain act of Congress passed the … March AD 1818…. Dated at Woodstock the 15th day of April 1818, Daniel Allen…. That in the month of May AD 1775 I entered into the Army and service of the United States in the revolutionary war, and was appointed and commissioned as Lieutenant in Capt Thomas [ ] company in Genl Putnams regiment in the Connecticut Line and continued in service until appointed a Captain in Col. Andrew Ward's Regiment of Connecticut Troops, which was sometime in May or June 1776 – and that I entered in said regiment Line and service until about the last day of January AD 1777 when I was appointed and Commissioned a Captain in Col. Samuel Wylys' regiment [called the 3rd Connecticut regiment] of the Connecticut line that I served…. Until the 7th day of July AD 1779 when I was discharged from the army … but have neither my Commissions nor discharge now in my possession …. I stand in use of the assistance from my Country for support, and that I am in the seventy sixth year of my age, and not able to labour for my support, 15 April 1818, Daniel Allen.

Daniel Allen of Ashford (Windham, CT), age 77… declares… the he engaged as an officer with the Continental Serice in 1775 and served as a Captain till July 1779 when he was honorably discharged at his own request as will appear by his commission and discharge in the War office. … he was discharged from the said service in Nelson's Point, New York. I am a Pensioner – my application was on the 15th day of April 1818 – the No of my certificate is 10,482. I am through age incapable of labor – I have a wife aged 63 years – We are both in usual health for persons of our years. She is an industrious woman – before I had my Pension I had no wife and no estate and was supported by the charity of my Brother Timothy Allen of Ashford. A schedule containing the whole of Capt Daniel Allen's estate and income of Ashford – his necessary cloathing and bedding excepted – 1 Desk 4.00. 3 glass bottles, 25c; Obligations supposed to be good – 126.165 Waggon harness for one horse – 8.00 An umbrella – 1.00

Appeared Capt Daniel Allen of Ashford… aged 81… refers to earlier application… and I was by reason of said schedule (of inventory)… struck off the pension list and my application rejected. Since which I and my wife have lived more than three years upon the property then stated in my schedule. I am aged and been inform and have consumed the same in necessary expenses and am now wholly destitute having no property but what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed.

These obligations were for money loaned to Ephraim Allen and Alanson Bolles which money I had by the assistance of my wife saved from the avails of my former pension. Those notes have been paid and the money expended in my support since – My schedule also exhibited obligations belonging to my wife amounting to $184.19 – These were notes given to my wife as I understood from her, before our marriage and which I promised her before marriage never to interfere with or collect – I never had these notes in any possession. My said wife has conducted with them as she pleased, (….) as she has had the care of me and our support our necessities have as she informs me and as I verily believe, compelled her to collect the money due thereon and apply to her and my support and for the last two years I have been fully supported by her from the friends aforesaid but which I have never controlled or used than by her consent. When I left home she declared to me that one dollar only remained – This I refused to take and am indebted to the charity of my friends to defray the expenses of this application. House of Representatives, Jan 10, 1824 Sir, Capt Daniel Allen of Ashford, Windham County Conn and is now an applicant to be restored. Some worthy citizens of t Ashford have requested me to state to you my knowledge of Capt. Allen's circumstances. I am acquainted with him, he lives within about four miles of me. He is an aged man and has a severe breach [probably archaic for “hernia” - RHS] which unfits him for labor. He married an old maid, a few years since, and with much frugality, they saved out of his pension money what constituted the items of his second schedule, perhaps, it might have included some trifling estate which was hers at their marriage. Since he has been stricken from the pension roll, I am satisfied the property returned in his second schedule and for which he was stricken off, must all have been expended in there [sic] support. Indeed, I have been repeatedly told by those who live in his immediate neighborhood, the past summer, that Capt. Allen was perfectly destitute, I have not heard a contrary opinion of his circumstances expressed: and had it not been for individual advancements fromtime to time, he must have been before this time supported under the regulations of the pauper lasws. Were I not perfectly satisfied of his extreme poverty and necessity, I would not have interposed a word in his behalf. And, as I am [certain]
