Biography

Eliza Allen was a sister to Frederick R. Allen. and a child of David C Allen and Margaret, his wife. She was born 31 Jan 1852. She died 14 Aug 1922 in Canton, Lincoln, South Dakota.^[1]

The 1860 US Census recorded her as 8 years old, b. abt 1852 in Canada, living in Merrimac, Sauk, Wisconsin, with her father, David C Allen, 37, carpenter, and mother, Margaret, 35, her sisters Mary Jane, Sarah Ann, 12, Emiline 12, and Margaret, 2, and her brother Thomas Allen, 10. ^[2]

She married George Washington Woodley on 15 Jul 1872 in Dane, Wisconsin.^[3]

In 1880 Eliza and George lived in Grant, Lincoln, Dakota Territory. George was listed as a farmer and the head of household, which included Eliza's parents, "Maggie," 53 and "David Allen," 60, and her brothers Freddie, 9 (b. abt 1871) and Frank, 17, who were both at school. ^[4]

In 1919 Eliza's brother Fred and his wife, Mary, visited Eliza in Canton, ^[5]

Eliza was remembered by Frances Latta, her brother's niece, in her memoirs as the wife of a wealthy farmer who had retired to Canton and lived in a "big, gray Victorian home" and who wintered in California every year.^[6]

In 1900 Eliza and George lived in Canton, Lincoln, South Dakota, with their daughter Pearle, who was born around 1882.^[7]
