Biography

Brigham Young is Notable.

Early Life

Brigham Young was born on June 1, 1801 at Whitingham, Windham County, Vermont. [1] His parents were John Young and Abigail Howe. [citation needed][2]

His family were Methodists. [1]

He lived in Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York for 18 years, where he worked as a carpenter, joiner, painter, and glazier. [1]

In early 1829 he moved to Mendon, Monroe County, New York. [1]

Life as a Latter Day Saint

Nauvoo Temple
Brigham became a member of the LDS Church between 1830 - 1848.

In the spring of 1830 Samuel Smith left a Book of Mormon with Brigham's brother, Phineas. [1] In 1831 Brigham heard men preaching Joseph Smith's teachings, and believed them. [1] In 1832 he and Phineas traveled to Columbia, Pennsylvania to attend some church meetings. [1] He was baptized into the church by Eleazer Miller on 14 April 1832. [1]

In Sep 1832 he traveled to Kirtland to meet Joseph Smith for the first time. [1] According to Brigham, Joseph Smith told some that "the time will come when Brother Brigham Young will preside over this Church". [1]

After meeting with Joseph Smith, Brigham and his brother Joseph Young went on a mission to Kingston, Upper Canada. [1] [3] He continued preaching in the Canada and New York area until September 1833, when he moved to Kirtland, Ohio. [1]

On February 14th, 1835 Brigham was called to be part of the first Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. [1]

Brigham had to flee Kirtland and moved to Missouri. [1] There was trouble in Missouri as well, so on February 14th, 1839 he had to flee and ended up in Atlas, Pike County, Illinois. [1] Soon after he moved to what is now Nauvoo, Illinois. [1]

In 1840 Brigham left Nauvoo to serve a mission in England. [1] During the time he was there, he and the other missionaries baptized over 7,000 people. [1]

He returned to Nauvoo, and was elected a member of city council. [1] While Brigham was in Nauvoo, Joseph Smith taught him about priesthood power and polygamy. [1] Brigham was faithful to his church and took many wives. [1]

Joseph Smith was killed in 1844. [1] The Quorum of the Twelve, including Brigham, became the leaders of the Church of Latter Day Saints. [1]

Leading the Church

Conflict arose between the Saints and their neighbors. Governor Thomas Ford strongly encouraged the Saints to leave Illinois and go west. [4] Violence against the Saints steadily increased. In September 1846 it was decided that they would leave Nauvoo and go to the Great Salt Lake valley. [5]

On December 5th, 1847, Brigham was nominated to be the new President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. [6]

Brigham Young was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Brigham led two pioneer companies to Utah. The first was in 1847, and consisted of 143 men, 3 women, and two children. [7] The second was in 1848, and consisted of over a thousand Saints. [8]

Brigham was elected governor of Deseret in 1849. [9] In 1851 a government for the Utah territory was created, and Brigham became its first governor. [9] While governor he turned Utah into a settled area with roads, schools, mail service, militia, public welfare system, and more. [9]

Death

Brigham died on August 29, 1877 at Salt Lake City, Utah. [10]

There is good evidence that Julia Marie Young (Young-46805) is the daughter of Brigham Young by Susanna Snively. FamilySearch accepts this as true.

Here is her profile, if the project managers want to add her as a daughter: Julia Marie (Young) Burton (abt.1853-abt.1889).

From what I understand, she was adopted by Brigham Young but he wasn't her biological father.

Thanks for the reply. If this is true, then her profile biography needs to be edited. Her biography currently says that she in one of Brigham Young's children.

She was born after her mother's marriage to Brigham Young. If Brigham Young isn't her father, who is, I wonder? What references are there to show she was adopted?

I hope the profile managers already know the answers to these questions, and can edit her profile to clear up the confusion.

I added a link on Julia's profile to Brigham's probate, which has the word "adopted" next to her name.
