James was the son of Benjamin Nabors Word and Eliza Jane Crutcher. He entered the Civil War as a Private in Company A, 40th Tennessee Regiment Infantry (Fifth Confederate Infantry, Walker's Regiment and Volunteers). He saw action in Tennessee where he was captured April 8, 1862. He was listed as a prisoner of war and held at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois. He would die there just over a month later. He is buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois - Confederate Section, Grave 542.
