Biography

Frances Karuth "Annie" Wise was born on 12 October 1884 in South Carolina, most likely in Calhoun County where her parents resided. She was the daughter of William Wade Wise and Isadora Amanda Rast.^[1]

She was married to John Oliver Wise about 1900 (estimate.) Frances was only age fifteen at the time of their marriage and when the 1900 United States Census was taken, listing her as John Oliver Wise's wife.^[2] They became the parents of six children. Listed with them on the 1910 United States Census are Ethel G., Myrtle I, Wade W., and Iva R. The family was living in the Bull Swamp Township of Lexington County, South Carolina, where John O. Wise was a farmer.^[3] Two other children were born between 1910 and 1920. They were Ola Mae and John Fuller. Ola Mae and John Fuller are listed, along with their other siblings in their father's obituary, published in The State, the text of which is transcribed on the FindAGrave memorial for John Oliver Wise.^[4] Additional evidence for John Fuller Wise's relationship as the son of Frances Karuth "Annie" Wise is also found on his death record.^[5]

Frances Karuth "Annie" Wise passed away on 24 May 1919 at the age of 34 of typhoid fever with the contributing cause the abortion of a dead fetus. Her death took place in the Columbia Hospital in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina.^[1] She is buried in Calvary UMC Church Cemetery, Swansea, Lexington County, South Carolina.^[6]

Research Notes

Her death certificate has her year of birth as 1884^[1], and her gravemarker is engraved with her year of birth as 1895^[6], but her actual year of birth was 1884, since she was fifteen years of age when the 1900 United States Census was taken.^[2]
