Biography

William was born on September 15, 1841 in Calloway County, KY to John Brent Wilson and Sarah Elizabeth Kelly. He married Martha "Mattie" Cochran on November 30, 1870. They had 4 children. He passed away on March 21, 1936 in Conyersville, TN at age 94. He was buried in Hazel Cemetery in Hazel, KY.

  • During the Civil War he joined Co. K, 46th Tn Inf., C.S.A., Paris, Tn. 29 Nov.1861.

He was captured at Island No. 10, 8 Apr. 1862, sent to Camp Douglas (P.O.W.) Camp, Chicago, Illinois. Exchanged 23 Sept. and rejoined the regiment at Jackson, Ms. At the re-organization of the regiment William D. Wilson was promoted to sergeant, holding the rank through the duration of the war. He was with the regiment during the Atlanta Campaign, taking part in the daily marching and fighting. Wounded, 28 July 1864, at the Battle of Ezra Church, captured and sent to Camp Douglas for the second time. His wound resulted in amputation of his right arm. He spent the rest of the war at Camp Douglas and was released Apr. of 1865. After the war William took part in all of the Confederate Veterans reunions in the area, receiving the "Southern Cross of Honor" from the Paris Tennessee Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, 3 June 1906. A new granite gravestone from the Veterans Administration was placed, 29 Aug. 2006, replacing the old weather-beaten marble stone, by great great grandsons Daryl Russell King and Stephen Lynn King, members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The original marble stone was placed July of 1940 by William Hardin "Bun" Wilson , his son. (Tennessee Confederate Pension #311).
