Biography

David was born about 1776 in North Carolina, United States. He appears in the 1850 census in Gadsden County with his wife, Mary. [1]

1850 census, Seventh District, Gadsden, Florida, United States
Household Age Sex Occupation Birthplace
David S Wilson 74 M Carpenter North Carolina
Mary Wilson 69 F North Carolina
David T Wilson 24 M Carpenter South Carolina
John R Wilson 21 M Carpenter South Carolina

In addition to the children listed in his household in 1850, it is known that he is the father of James M Wilson and Francis E (Wilson) Speight from relationships listed in some early Gadsden County, Florida deeds. [2] [3] So far, the confirmed children of him are:

  1. James Madison Wilson (abt.1813-1897)
  2. David T. Wilson (1823-1912)
  3. John R Wilson (b. 1829)
  4. Frances E (Wilson) Speight (abt.1835-)

The exact year and location of his death is unknown, but the last known records of him are from 1850 in Gadsden County, Florida.

Research Notes

Possibly the father of Thomas D Wilson (abt.1802-aft.1885), because they are listed next to each other in the 1850 census, and Thomas shares the same South Carolina birth location as David S Wilson's other children. Additionally, Thomas D and James M Wilson are listed together on a bond. [4] He is also potentially the father of William Wesley Wilson (abt.1805-abt.1856), based on shared family names. For example, James Madison Wilson has a son named William W Wilson (abt.1838-aft.1920). However, it is still not clear if they were immediate family. There were at least three other Wilsons that could have been close in age to David S Wilson in Gadsden County. These are Simpson Wilson, [5] Robert H Wilson, [6] and James Wilson (abt.1775-bef.1845). [7]

1850 deed suggests he has a connection with Richland District, South Carolina.

As far as David's family, James S Willson (abt.1780-bef.1820), who died in Columbia Co. in 1820, Georgia might be of particular interest, since he had sons James Madison and David, the same names of some Wilsons encounted in Gadsden Co. during the 1800s, who were born in South Carolina. His will lists his friend Robert Lazenby, and in the will of a David Wilson of Warren Co., Georgia, David lists a daughter Harriet Lazenby. However, David S Wilson is not believed to be the brother of James, because James's brother David Wilson (1786-1827) died in Warren County, Georgia in 1827. Also, there are wills in Marion County, South Carolina listing Wilson, Cooper, and Davis families on the same wills (also listed on this James Willson's will). Additonally, Marion County is the place of death for Collins Woodbery's mother, Elizabeth (Dunham) Woodbury (1748-1831). Methodist minister Collins Woodbury (abt.1781-bef.1856) is the alleged father of James Madison Wilson's suspected wife, Martha Woodbery and was allegedly involved in the building of one of the first Methodist churches built in Florida, in Escambia County. David S Wilson, his son James Madison Wilson, and other family members were carpenters that came from South Carolina. It is possible there is a common connection between these families in the South Carolina Methodist Conference's mission to Gadsden County, Florida in the 1820s.
