This is the profile for Elizabeth Whittier who married Benjamin Hand in Southampton, Long Island in February 1669/70.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Abraham Whittier of Marblehead and Manchester, Massachusetts. Her paternal parentage is established by (1) the record of her marriage to Benjamin Hand of Southampton,[1] (2) a record of a transaction in which Peter Whittier of Southampton/Brookhaven referred to Benjamin Hand as his "well beloved brother,"[2] (3) Peter Whittier's will which refers to Peter's inheritance at Manchester that his father bought of John Norman,[3] and (4) a 1656 court case in which Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Whithare, was fined for abusing and beating the daughter of John Norman.[4][5]
Based on her 1670 date of marriage, Elizabeth was probably born sometime in 1645-1652. Based on the 1656 lawsuit against her for abusing and beating the daughter of John Norman, Elizabeth was probably born no later than 1648. It is therefore likely that Elizabeth was born sometime in 1645-1648. Based on her father's residency in Marblehead during that time period, Elizabeth was probably born there.
Based on Elizabeth's estimated date of birth (1645-1648) and a 1664 deposition given by her father's second wife that she was about 30 years (and thus born about 1634),[6] Elizabeth was no doubt the daughter of Abraham's first wife, whose name has not been determined.
Based on the residency of her father, Abraham Whittier, Elizabeth lived in Marblehead, Massachusetts until about 1652 and then moved to Manchester, Massachusetts.
Elizabeth moved from Manchester, Massachusetts to Southampton, Long Island sometime between March 30, 1669[7] and February 27, 1669/70.[1] As discussed in his profile Elizabeth's older brother Peter Whittier moved to the Southampton/Brookhaven area of Long Island sometime in 1662-1664. It is likely that Peter arranged for Elizabeth to come to Long Island to be introduced to his friend Benjamin Hand as a potential husband. Elizabeth married Benjamin Hand in Southampton on February 27, 1669/70.[1]
Benjamin Hand and his brothers Thomas and Shamgar moved from Long Island to Cape May County, New Jersey in the early 1690s.[8] Assuming Elizabeth had not died before then, she probably died in Cape May County.
