Civil War:
Rufus enlisted in Infantry Battalion, Smith's Legion, Georgia Volunteers on 28 Aug. 1862 and appointed as 2nd Corporal. He transferred to Company E, 65th Regiment, Georgia Infantry in Mar. 1863. He was appointed First Corporal in May or June of 1863. Roll dated March and April, 1864, states that he was undergoing a sentence of court martial. He deserted at Kennasaw Mountain, Georgia, on 2 July 1864. He was captured by the Union Army at Marietta, Georgia on 2 June 1864, and was sent to Camp Douglas prison in Illinios. He was released on 16 June 1865.
