Biography

Michael Dee Waters was born in Charlotte, NC. He grew up in Charlotte, in Bennettsville, SC, and in Hampton, VA, prior to completing Garinger High School in Charlotte in 1960. He received his bachelor's degree from Davidson College in 1964 and his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) in 1969. He served in the US Army Reserve (1969-71) at Edgewood Arsenal, MD, where he performed research on wound healing. Dr. Waters worked for over 40 years in research and development positions at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1971-2002), the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (2002-2006), and at Integrated Laboratory Systems Inc. (2006-2013), all in Research Triangle Park, NC. He is a widely published scientist with well over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports. He has lectured extensively worldwide. He edited Mutation Research - Reviews in Mutation Research for 25 years, and has held adjunct professorships at UNC and Duke University. He is the recipient of a number of scientific awards including the Alexander Hollaender Award bestowed by the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (EMGS). He has served as President of the EMGS and of the International Association of Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Societies. Several of his publications and three scientific databases of international significance were developed under his direction and are recognized as major contributions to the fields of genetic toxicology, cancer research, toxicogenomics, and risk assessment. He served as President of the Rotary Club of Research Triangle Park in 2008-2009 and, received the Rotarian of the Year Award in 2018, and served as Co-President of the Rotary Club of Research Triangle Park in 2019-2020. He was the senior editor of "The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Future: Virology, Epidemiology, Translational Toxicology, and Therapeutics" -- a book published electronically and in hard copy in 2022 by the Royal Society of Chemistry, Issues in Toxicology Series.
