Mary Jane was born about 1838.
From the Isle of Wight County, Virginia, Registration of Free Negro Certification Records:[1]
Mary Jane Ward is registered as a negro woman 18 yrs old. 4 feet 11 1/2 inches high_black complexion, has a small scar under the left eye, and the little fingers of each hand inclined to be crooked. registered by order of court 4th Augt 1856.
