Biography

John Ward was born in about 1814 in Coleshill, Warwickshire. No baptism is found but John interacts with siblings whose baptisms are found. John's parents were John Ward and Sarah Woodward.

John was a millwright like his father and grandfather. A millwright made the working machinery for wind and water-powered mills, but the trade developed over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as the innovation of the industrial revolution influenced the development of new technologies and the introduction of steam power.

John married Ann Hooper on 1 July 1839 at St. Peter and St. Paul in Aston, after banns. Both were described as of Aston Road in Duddeston. The witnesses were James Silvester and Sarah Silvester, relations of Ann. The couple had the following children:

  • Harriet Ward was born in about 1839. No birth record is found but a Caroline Ward's birth was registered between July and September 1839, her mother's maiden name being Hooper.[1] Perhaps her name was later changed. She later married Edward Turner.
  • William Ward was born in 1840 on Woodcock in Aston.[2][3]
  • Emma Ward was born in 1844 in Aston.[4] She later married John Turner, brother to Edward, and then Nehemiah Haddock after she was widowed.
  • Eliza Ward was born in 1846 in Aston.[5] She was buried on 10 March 1850 at St. Peter and St. Paul, the family living at Woodcock Street.[6]
  • Charles Ward was born in 1849 in Aston.[7]
  • Rebecca Ward was born in 1851.[8] She later married John Brewin.
  • Mary Ann Ward was born in 1853 in Aston.[9]
  • Sarah Ward was born in 1856 in Aston.[10] She possibly never married.
  • Maria Ward was born in 1858 in Aston.[11]
  • George Ward was born in 1861 in Aston.[12]
