Biography

Ann (Ward) Nichols immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Ann Ward was born in England about 1629[1] the daughter of Andrew Ward and his wife Hester (Sherman) Ward [2] and she probably emigrated with her parents and some of her siblings to New England in 1633.[3]

About 1650, Ann married Caleb Nichols, son of Francis Nicholls who had immigrated to Stratford, Connecticut Colony with his father and other members of his family, in 1639.[2][4]

They lived at Stratford until about 1670 when they, with most of their children, moved to Woodbury, Connecticut Colony,[2] one of the original settlers.[5]

Caleb Nichols wrote his will dated August 14, 1690 and proved November 8, 1690.[5]and handed down his vast belongings to his wife and children. He had proprietary rights at Stratford and a plantation at Woodbury.[2] The Woodbury homestead was to be divided between Ann and their son John, but the lands were to be Ann's during her time as a widow... if that wasn't enough for her livelihood, John was to supply his mother what she needed. Caleb made allowance also for Ann that if she marry again and bury yet another husband and needs to return, their son John was to receive her and "Let her have which roome shee pleaseth in ye dwelling house." If Indian warfare drove Ann and her son John from their homestead in Woodbury, their son Abraham was to welcome them to live at Stratford.[5]

Caleb died between August 14 and November 8 of 1690 at Woodbury.[2]

Ann (Ward) Nichols died July 23, 1718[2] at Woodbury.[5]
