Founder of Fred Walker and Co, and manufacturer of "Vegemite". He also trademarked "Coon Cheese", named after Edward Coon who patented the "Cooning" process.
Frederick Walker was born at Hawthorn in Melbourne in the Colony of Victoria, on the 5th of January 1884. He was the second of three sons, born to Harry Walker and Emily Mary Haussen.[1]
In 1886, Fred's father died, when he was two years old, which was the same year that his younger brother Theyre was born.
In 1913, the year that his younger brother died, Fred Walker married Mabel Ashton Perrin,[2] born 1884 in Willliamstown, the daughter of Harry William Perrin and Annie Elizabeth Freyer, and they had one daughter, Sheilah Perrin Alsop. Mabel Walker died in 1967.
In 1914, Fred's mother died.
Fred hired chemist, Cyril Callister in 1923, to develop a yeast extract similar to Marmite. This was named Vegemite.
After 1926, Fred began processing Coon Cheese in Australia using the method patented by Edward Coon, coining the phrase Cooning Process to honour him.
In 1935, shortly before his death, Fred Walker launched the Australian arm of the patented Cheddar cheese first created by Edward Coon, and named the trademarked Coon cheese after him.
Fred Walker died on the 21st of July 1935, at Melbourne, Victoria.[3]
