Biography

Martha was born about 1741 in Orange County, Virginia to John Rutherford Walker III and his wife Nancy Houston. She married Alexander Montgomery about 1760.

The sons of Alexander Montgomery and Martha Walker:

1. Alexander Montgomery was born 1 Feb. 1762, in Orange Co. North Carolina, He married Mary Elizabeth Johnson in a fort on French Broad River Possibly in Tennessee.
2. John Montgomery, was born 5 Aug. 1764, in Orange Co. North Carolina. He married (1) Susanna Porter, his first cousin, on 5 Aug. 1785. She died on 30 Nov. 1802. He married (2) Elizabeth Harris on 20 No. 1804. She was born about 1770 and died 14 Sept.1846.
3. Michael Montgomery was born in 1765 in Virginia. It is not known whom he married, when or where. He died, intestate, before October 1836 at which time an estate was opened for him in Parke County, Indiana.
4. Philip Montgomery, born about 1767, married Margery McClintock on 25 Nov. 1814, in Floyd Co. Kentucky. Tradition says that Philip and Joseph Montgomery were brothers of James and William Montgomery. It was also reported that Philip fought in the Revolution, but it seems more likely it was the War of 1812 (?).
5. Joseph Montgomery born about 1770 in Virginia. Tradition says that Joseph was in an Indian skirmish. The story goes that he and some comrades had been on a river and were trying to reach a fort on the bank. While running from the river to the fort, one of the comrades was wounded, and Joseph stopped to help him and he was himself wounded in the hip, however, they both managed to reach the fort.
6. James Montgomery, born about 1773 in Virginia, married Elizabeth Gibson in 1794. She was born 24 Sept. 1767 in York Co. Pennsylvania. They settled in Putnam Co. Indiana. James and Elizabeth had no children, but they raised two of William's daughters (Margaret and Eliza). The Methodist Episcopal Church now known as Brick Chapel, Putnam County, was organized at the home of James Montgomery. Elizabeth died 5 Sep. 1830 (date from Gibson Bible).
7. William Montgomery was born in Virginia on 10 Dec.1779. About 1800, William married Sarah Gibson, sister of Elizabeth Gibson who married his brother, James Montgomery. Sarah Gibson was born 5 Nov. 1780.
8. Robert Cicero Montgomery born 22 Jun 1780 in Amherst, Virginia he married Elizabeth McConnell about 1802 and 25 Sep 1852 Cumming, Forsyth, Georgia, USA

She passed away about 1810.

Daughters of John & Ann Houston Walker: Susanna Ann Walker & Martha Walker were both grandmothers to Jane Montgomery Poplett.

* Susanna Ann (Walker) Porter had married Patrick Porter who was Susanna (Porter) Montgomery’s mother who was John Montgomery’s wife;
* Martha (Walker) Montgomery had married Alexander Montgomery who was the father of John Montgomery (Jane’s father) who married Susanna (Porter) Montgomery (Jane’s mother).
* Thus John & Ann Houston Walker were Jane’s Great Grandparents through BOTH of her parents (John & Susanna).
