Biography

Serena (Thorne) Lake is Notable.

Serena Thorne was born on 28 October 1842 in Shebbear, Devon, England. She was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Thorne, both Bible Christian preachers. Her grandfather William O'Bryan had been one of the founders of the denomination. Serena had become a widely-known preacher by the time she turned 21.

In 1865, she went to Queensland to preach and establish the Bible Christian church. In 1870, she moved on to South Australia at the invitation of Rev. James Way. She married Reverend Octavius Lake in March 1871 in Adelaide (she had previously known him in England). They had seven children, only two survived to adulthood.

Serena Lake was involved in the foundation meeting of the Women's Suffrage League in 1888, and believed and preached strongly that gender equality was the original design of the creator.^[1]

She was also influential in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in South Australia.

She died on 9 July 1902 and is buried in Payneham Cemetery.
