Biography

Marie Josephe Thériot was born about 1707 in Acadie, daughter of Germain Thériot and Anne Pellerin. [1]. The family had moved to Cobeguid by 1703[2] again in Cobequid in 1707 [3] and finally, in Cobequit in 1714[4]

She was married to Jean Benoit around 1728 in Acadie. [1]

Their children were:

  1. Anne Benoit (about 1729– )
  2. Joseph Benoit (about 1731– )
  3. Elisabeth Benoit (about 1733– )
  4. Osite Blanche Benoit (about 1736–after 1762)
  5. Jean Baptiste Benoit (about 1739– )
  6. Jean Louis Benoit (about 1741–about 1764)
  7. Paul Benoit (about 1743–about 1758)

Widowed Marie Josèphe was listed on the 1752 census at Baye de Mordienne, Isle Royale. [5]

During the French and Indian War, the siege of Louisbourg Fortress in 1758 resulted in the British expelling the Acadians from Ile Saint-Jean and Ile Royale. As French subjects they were deported to France. Marie-Josèphe and her children were among the 342 passengers who were forced aboard the Duke William, bound for France. Close to half of the passengers, 146, did not survive the horrific conditions on board and died at sea. Twenty nine died at hospital within 2 months of arrival in Saint-Malo on 1 November 1758.

Marie-Josèphe died in 1758 at sea, during the deportation crossing to France. Her children were on the list of arrivals in St-Malo, France, in the roll of the Duke William which disembarked on 1 Nov 1758. Her son Paul died at the hospital on 5 November. Her sons Joseph and Jean-Louis were hospitalized upon arrival. [6][1]
