Biography

Ferdinando Thayer immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Ferdinando Thayer[1] (also appearing in records as Farthenando)[2] was the second son of Thomas and Margery Thayer.

“Ferdinando Tayer, born 18 April, 1625. Godfathers: Ferdinando Tayer (his father's cousin), William Tayer (his uncle). Godmother: Margarett King. Settled in Braintree, Mass., where he married 14 January, 1652-3 to Huldah Hayward and later settled in Mendon, Mass., where he died 28 March, 1713.”[3]

Ferdinando Thayer married Huldah Hayward of Braintree, Mass. 14 January 1652.[4]

Thayer lived in Braintree until after his father's death when he removed to Mendon, Mass. with a colony from Braintree and Weymouth, where many of their descendants now (1873) live.

"Ferdinando Thayer, son of Thomas Thayer was baptized at Thornbury England April 18, 1625. He came to this country with his father and married January 1, 1652, Huldah Hayward of Braintree Massachusetts. He lived in Braintree until after his father's death when he removed to Mendon, in that province with a colony of men from Braintree and Weymouth. He was one of the largest proprietors of the new township. His homestead was a little south of the present center of the town on the road to Providence. He held many offices of honor and trust in the town and was a man of wealth according to the standards of his day. He provided farms for all his sons and several of them also became extensive owners of land. Some of the original Thayer homesteads in Mendon have never passed out of the possession of his descendants. Six of his children were born in Mendon. Mendon was settled in 1662 as a plantation and continued thus until 1667 when it was incorporated as a town, but during King Philip's war, the settlement was broken up and most of the families sought refuge in the former homes in Braintree and Weymouth until the war was over. The Thayers returned to Mendon about 1680 and Ferdinando Thayer died there March 28, 1713. His wife Huldah, died there September 1, 1690. Children born at Braintree: Sarah born May 1, 1654-55; Huldah, June 16, 1657; Jonathan March 18 1658; David June 20, 1660, died August 1 1674; Naomi January 28, 1662-63. Children born at Mendon: Thomas; Samuel; Isaac mentioned below; David baptized September 17, 1677, died August 29, 1678; Josiah; Ebenezer; Benjamin born December 20, 1712.[1]"[5]
"Ferdinando Thayer, second son of Thomas and Margery Thayer, resided with his parents in Braintree, Mass., until after the death of his father when he and others removed to a new plantation called Nipmug, afterwards called Mendon, Worcester County, Mass[achusetts. He was one of the largest proprietors of the said township, his residence or homestead was a little south of the present center of the town on the Providence Road; held many offices of honor in his town and commonwealth; was a man of wealth in his day and age of the world, and his sons were all provided with farms by him, and several of his sons became extensive land dealers, and many of their descendants occupy those farms to this day, and have never changed names in title for over two hundred years; six of his children born in Mendon, Mass, the records of which were destroyed by King Phillips war from 1666 to 1680 which is lost by that war- Preserved Smith Thayer.
Mendon was first settled by the whites as a plantation in 1662, and continued in that union until 1667, when it was invested with town privileges by the general court of the commonwealth and so remained until the breaking out of the Indian hostilities in 1675, when the settlement was broken up the settlers flying to Braintree and Weymouth, where they staid till 1679 or 80 to January 3d,1680, after which date there is no interruption up to the present time. - Alexander H. Allen, Town Clerk of Mendon.[2][6]

Ferdinando married as his 2nd wife (before 1696) Ann Freebury, a widow. No record of her marriage or death is found except in the court records at Boston which give much information on her life in Mendon and the violent domestic quarrel with Ferdinando Thayer and his sons to whom he deeded his property, partly at least to prevent her from acquiring it. Ann Freebury was an "eastern woman", that is, from Maine, probably driven here by the Indian Wars; she was born about 1648 according to her own deposition. She departed from Ferdinando Thayer after 1700, when he made an agreement "to be shaft of her" after she testified he and his sons sold liquor to the Indians and that he had deserved to have his house burnt by the Indians during the War and that it would occur again if he did not stop trafficking with them, that he had tried to starve her by not providing food in the house, etc.

Ann Thayer, aged 48 years, gave a deposition in court in July 1696 that she saw Ebenezer Thayer sell "two quarts of sider" to an Indian. On May 7, 1700 Ferdinando Thayer complained of "the wild words, carriages and actions of my wicked disposed and perverse wife Ann Thayer formally an Eastern woman and until my unhappy marriage with her known by the name of Ann Freebury who hath been endeavoring to ruinate me in respect to my person, name, and estate either by fire in burning my house over my head as she hath lately threatened in so much that I am afraid to live with her", etc., "and that none of my children durst live with me, and I am unable to help myself being almost 80 years old, and by reason of her private conveying of things out of the house my house is left almost destitute of outwards comforts", etc. Depositions were also made by Ebenezer Thayer aged 26, his wife Martha a.25, Benjamin Thayer a.20, William Howard a,32, John Rocket a.59, John Bridges a.52 and Peter Holbrook a.41.[7]
